Ohio Stunned as Toledo Wins on OT Goal
Oct. 28, 2007
TOLEDO, Ohio - Ohio limited Toledo and the MAC's highest scoring offense to just one goal in regulation and forced a pair of overtime periods but the Rockets scored a late golden goal and defeated the Bobcats 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Senior forward Larissa Najjar (Columbus), who began the season starting on defense, scored her first goal of the season and third of her career on a penalty kick in the seventh minute to give Ohio an early lead. The Rockets' (13-4-1, 8-2 MAC) high-powered pair of forwards, sophomore Ali Leak and sophomore Molly Cornwell both tallied scores in the contest. Cornwell evened the score at 1-1 in the first half with her MAC-best 11th goal of the season and Leak notched her seventh goal of the season early in the second overtime to hand the Bobcats (4-10-3, 4-5-1 MAC) their fourth straight conference defeat after winning four of their first six MAC matches. The Rockets remained undefeated at Scott Park this season with the win on Toledo's Senior Day. Ohio once again took more shots than its opponent, with an 11-10 advantage against Toledo. However, the Bobcats took half as many corner kicks, 4-8, as the Rockets and Toledo keeper Andrea Plewes recorded five saves while Ohio's Jess MacLean (Loveland) did not tally a save in Ohio's second-to-last conference match of the 2007 season. The Bobcats will be back on the road for their last regular season contest this season with a rare Thursday night battle with Akron. The MAC Tournament begins shortly thereafter on Nov. 4 with the top eight teams in the 12-team league advancing and the top four teams hosting first-round matches. ---------------------- Joe Waltasti is the women's soccer contact for the Ohio media relations office.
