Final Stats

TOLEDO, Ohio – Ohio Soccer’s participation in the 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament came to an end on Sunday, as the Bobcats lost at Toledo by a final score of 8-0. The Rockets, champions of the MAC regular season, scored early and never looked back Sunday, keeping Ohio on the defensive throughout the contest.

The Bobcats (7-11-2, 4-5-2 MAC) have played Toledo three seasons in a row in the conference tournament, dropping all three contests. Toledo (12-6-2, 9-1-1 MAC) outshot Ohio 23-12 on Sunday, firing a total of ten shots on goal. Kelsey Pichel (Rochester, Mich.) led the way for the Bobcats, firing two shots on goal during the match.

Toledo’s Rachel MacLeod had a very strong day on Sunday, scoring a game-high two goals and adding one assist.

"Everything went right for Toledo today," said Head Coach Stacy Strauss. "We took a gamble and played a more attacking style, and though it produced more shots on goal than we've had in almost every other game this season, we failed to finish them and were left vulnerable on the counterattack."

"Conversely, UT finished at a phenomenal rate, scoring eight of their ten total shots on goal," she added.

Ohio registered the first shot of the match when Rachael Philpot (Cincinnati, Ohio) fired a blast just high of goal in the third minute. Toledo answered back quickly, though, hitting one shot high in the sixth minute and finding the back of the net in the eighth. Kristen Mattei headed in a nice corner kick from teammate Rachael Kravitz to put her side up 1-0 early.

Things settled in for a few moments after this goal, with the Bobcats doing a better job of holding possession and creating scoring chances. The Green and White came within inches of equalizing in the 24th minute courtesy of a strike by Cathryn Rogers (Etobicoke, Ontario). It was not meant to be, however, as the ball stuck the post and caromed away from the target. Toledo took advantage of this bit of luck and went right back down the field to score its second goal of the day.

The Bobcats were made to pay for a short letdown near the end of the first half, as the Rockets scored two quick goals in the 33rd and 37th minutes to extend their lead to four.

Following two quick goals at the beginning of the second half which made the score 6-0, Ohio put together a few good chances of its own. Pichel fired a shot on target in the 56th minute and both Toye Famodu and Remi Famodu (Bloomington, Minn.) added shots as well. Toledo goalkeeper Vicki Traven was there each time, making multiple saves to keep her side from conceding.

Toledo finished things off in the 67th and 88th minutes, adding two more goals to put the final score at 8-0.
