ATHENS, Ohio - Associate head coach Jim Welch and the Ohio soccer program have announced the dates of the eighth annual Ohio University Extended Soccer Clinics. This summer's clinics will be held July 13-16, 2009. Sessions are open to participants ages 6-14, with half-day clinics (ages 6-14) available for $110 and full-day clinics (ages 10-14) for $210. "Ohio Soccer is very much looking forward to hosting its 2009 Extended Soccer Clinics," Welch said. These clinics present our program with a terrific opportunity to strengthen ties with the Athens community and provide area players with a fun and exciting way to improve their skill level and understanding of the game." Clinics will get under way each day at 9 a.m. with a 20-minute warm-up before beginning group and skill sessions at 9:20. Games will be played from approximately 11:30 a.m. until noon. Following an hour break for lunch, full-day participants will participate in a combination of technical and tactical training sessions before wrapping up the day with games and other competitions. All sessions will take place at either Chessa Field or the adjacent Pruitt Field, both located on Shafer Street. Directing the clinics for the third-consecutive year will be Welch. Welch will be entering his seventh year on the sidelines at Ohio and his third as the associate head coach of the Bobcats. Before coming to Athens, Welch was the men's assistant coach at his alma mater Marquette University. He also played for Major League Soccer's (MLS) Los Angeles Galaxy and was a member of both the under 18 and under 20 U.S. National Team player pools. Welch holds a USSF B coaching license. Assisting Welch will be Ohio head coach Stacy Strauss, who just completed her ninth season at the helm of the program, former Bobcat standout Amy Switzer, who is now an assistant coach at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and members of the Bobcat varsity soccer team. All participants must wear cleats and bring their own sneakers in case inclement weather forces sessions to be moved indoors. Those taking part in the full-day clinics should bring their own lunch, while all are strongly encouraged to wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water.
