ATHENS, Ohio - Nine home matches, four of which will be against non-conference opponents, highlight the 2013 Ohio University women's soccer team's schedule, the entirety of which was released on Tuesday. Ohio will open the regular season with a three-game homestand on Friday, Aug. 23 when Indiana University visits Athens.
"I think this is a really great schedule because we have four non-conference home games," said head coach Aaron Rodgers. "We have good teams coming in that present a nice challenge."
Ohio and Indiana played a high-scoring match on Aug. 19 of last season, with the `Cats falling by a final score of 4-2 in Bloomington. The Hoosiers finished the 2012 season with a 9-9-1 mark which included a 4-7 record in Big Ten play. Indiana is led offensively by international star Orianica Velasquez, who scored seven goals and dished out four assists last season. She played internationally for her home country of Colombia during the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.
Following their home date with the Hoosiers, the `Cats will welcome Wright State (Aug. 25) and DePaul (Aug. 30) to Chessa Field to round out the month of August.
Ohio opens September with two straight road matches, playing at Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 1) and Niagara (Sept. 6). The Bobcats will play their final home non-conference game of the year on Sept. 8 vs. Morehead State before completely ending the non-conference slate with trips to Youngstown State (Sept. 13) and Cleveland State (Sept. 20).
Rodgers will open his first Mid-American Conference season at home on Sept. 27 when Bowling Green comes to town. This will be the first game of a weekend which also includes a visit from Central Michigan on Sept. 29.
"To be able to open up my first foray into the MAC schedule at home is very exciting," Rodgers added. "Bowling Green has a new coach and she is doing great things up there while Central Michigan is an NCAA team from last year. To have those two games at home for our first MAC weekend is exciting."
Ohio's next four MAC games will be on the road, as the `Cats play at 2012 MAC champion Miami (Oct. 4), Ball State (Oct. 6), Akron (Oct. 11), and Buffalo (Oct. 13).
The Bobcats will end the season in a favorable manner, playing three of their final five games at home. Ohio hosts Eastern Michigan (Oct. 18) and Western Michigan (Oct. 20), travels west to take on Toledo (Oct. 25) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 27) before ending the season at home on Halloween against Kent State (Oct. 31).
The 2013 MAC Tournament will run from Nov. 3-10. As in years past, the top eight teams will qualify for postseason play with the top four seeds hosting quarterfinal matches and the top remaining seed hosting the semifinal and final rounds.
