ATHENS, Ohio –This summer, student-athletes on the Ohio University soccer team will be writing a weekly blog series about their lives as Bobcats. The series began early in May and will carry all the way through the first five games of the 2013 regular season.
Rising junior forward Liz Finley (Mason, Ohio) continues the series with her entry for the week of July 1.
My 2013 Summer Break by Liz Finley
I can't believe it's already July! This summer is flying by and although it has been a great break I am so excited to get back to Athens and start preseason! Between working out, babysitting, and fixing a house, I have managed to stay pretty busy. There has been some excitement in my summer as well!
Near the beginning of the break, my family and I were boating on the Ohio River and we stopped to catch some rays and hang out. After a couple hours we decided to go, but the boat had other ideas. We sat stranded in the middle of the Ohio River for about an hour before my uncle flagged down another boat and the nice man towed us back to the marina.
Another exciting adventure was going to a baseball game in Cincinnati and almost catching some home run balls!
Most recently, I had a pretty (scary) exciting afternoon when my dad’s grill caught on fire. Yes, flames were coming out of the thing! I was cooking chicken and veggies and noticed that the flames were getting a tad high, so I asked my younger brother if the foil that was holding the veggies was going to catch on fire. He said no so I closed the lid and two seconds later flames were coming out from under the grill.
"Jake, get out here!! This doesn't look right!" I yelled. He came running out with a potholder trying to turn the burners off while my mom, who just got home from work, grabbed a half empty water bottle and tried to squirt it out. That obviously wasn't working so I ran and grabbed the fire extinguisher, opened it and practically stuck it in the grill and used all of it yet flames were still coming out! Finally my mom grabbed the hose and started spraying the grill (meanwhile my brother is getting mad because she keeps squirting him on accident—I’m of course laughing while all of this is going on). My brother then took over the hose and eventually put the fire out and turned the propane tank off and all was well.
Except for the grill.
Luckily, my dad wasn't mad. My brother thinks it was a grease fire and my dad thinks it was the oil I put on my veggies. Even though I have a pretty good record of breaking things in the house I think it was the grease, so it wasn't my fault!!
Even with all this excitement I am so excited to get back and to see all of the individual hard work everyone is putting in this summer to work towards the season!
