ATHENS, Ohio - This summer, student-athletes on the Ohio University soccer team have been writing a weekly blog series about their lives as Bobcats. The series began early in May and will conclude just prior to the outset of fall training camp.
Rising sophomore midfielder Lauren Haley (Charlestown, Ind.) continues the series with her entry for the week of July 29.
My 2013 Summer Break by Lauren Haley
This has been an amazing summer, although I have missed my Ohio teammates. I have had the perfect combination of family, individual soccer training, vacation, and work. Each day this summer has worked out without a hitch.
I spend most of my time getting fit and preparing for the upcoming season. My brother and sister both play for their high schools and when they have practice 2-3 times a week I go and run on the track while they are practicing. I do shuttles, intervals, ball work, and try to beat my previous day's times on the fitness test. When they don't have practice, I do my cardio workouts at home and do ball work with my brother and sister. My brother has worked out with me almost every day this summer so we kept each other going with a little competition.
I'm so excited for this year! I know everyone is working hard to make Ohio Soccer the best it can be. I'm looking forward to our season and excited to meet the incoming freshmen!! I know they will be a great addition to the team.
I have been working for my dad this summer in a part-time capacity. He is a property manager and he would hire me for any job he saw fit for me to do, which in itself is very dangerous. My jobs this summer ranged from cleaning condo clubhouses, painting a pool house sign, scrubbing scuff marks off walls in the hallways, picking up trash in the parking lots, trimming trees and bushes, and cleaning and unclogging gutters on 32 buildings. It was hard work but it was great experience, especially having something different every couple of days.
I almost got my dad in trouble working on one of the big jobs he asked me to do. While I was up on a ladder cleaning the first story gutters, an older woman came stomping out of her condo and asked, "Who in the world has got you doing this? You can't be more than 12 years old and should not be on a ladder that high in the air!" I laughed pretty hard when I told her I was 19 and almost ready to turn 20!
Besides working, I did go on a little road trip with a few friends. We decided to take a trip to Sandusky, Ohio, to experience the roller coaster capital of the world! It has some of the highest, craziest coasters ever made. My favorite ride was the one which accelerated to 120 mph in 3 seconds with a 400 foot drop. My family also spent a week on the beach in Florida. It was so much fun to run on the beach.
I had a great time this summer but I am ready to get back on the field. One more week and Athens will be home again. "Say what!"
