ATHENS, Ohio – This summer, student-athletes on the Ohio University soccer team have been writing a weekly blog series about their lives as Bobcats. The series began early in May and will conclude just prior to the outset of fall training camp.
Rising junior defender Nicolle Varney (Medina, Ohio) and rising sophomore forward Holly Harris (Batavia, Ohio) end the series with their entries for the week of Aug. 5.
My 2013 Summer Break by Nicolle Varney
It seems really strange to be writing my summer blog while I was packing up to head back to Athens. The summer has gone by so fast! Time really does fly by when you are having fun.
Summers to me are always about tradition. I was able to do things that my family has done for years. This would include an Ohio theme park tradition, a professional baseball game, a couple of hilarious golf outings, afternoons by the pool, the annual family car cleaning day, every Saturday morning breakfast with my great grandparents, and lots of great food at family cookouts. My dad and I always like to get away and go bike riding together, too. We get to catch up and enjoy each other’s company on our 12-mile rides. Sunday nights watching trashy T.V. with my mom is always a highlight. You’ve got to love reality television!
Many of my close friends from home stayed at school this summer, so I had to make the best of the few times that I got to see them! It is always nice to catch up and share soccer and school experiences. One plus to my summer was that I got to go to Athens and visit my roommates Nicole Amari and Gabby Hausfeld. I also got to see my other roommate Liz Finley when she came up to Medina for a weekend. For the majority of my summer, I also got to hang out with Alex Stec. It was awesome being able to spend time together and talk about our always-crazy weeks. I can’t wait to make more great memories with my other teammates this season!
This summer was also filled with lots of new experiences for me. The most exciting would have to be that I bought a new car. My family officially became a four driver, four car family when I bought my car and my brother Connor got his license!
I got to house sit/dog sit for about a month this summer as well as nanny. From the first day home to the last weekend home I got to nanny for the greatest family. I got to handle potty training, swim lessons, tornado warnings, a flooded basement, play dates, and the everyday boo-boos that happen in three and five-year-old boys’ lives. The not-so-crazy days with them included playing at the pool, playing soccer, going on wagon and bike rides, reading unlimited bedtime stories, and watching countless reruns of cartoons. It was such a great experience and it will help prepare me for my future with kids and my education major. I could go on and on about all the great times! (I’m not joking, either.)
I also got to get a few new things for my apartment this year. While packing, my mom and I discovered things that we totally forgot about buying. Oops!
On Thursday, practice is going to start and I am extremely excited. I can’t wait to be back with my team and start working hard for this upcoming season. Go Bobcats!
My 2013 Summer Break by Holly Harris
It’s crazy to think that the season is about to start! I cannot be more excited about reuniting with my teammates and also getting to know and form friendships with the incoming freshmen.
My job this summer was babysitting a two-year-old little boy. It was a good thing he was cute because he sure was a booger sometimes. I think my favorite day we spent together was when I took him to the zoo. He would get so excited when we would see an animal and when we would leave to go onto the next he would blow it a kiss and tell them goodbye. It never got old! He was such a trooper that day and waited until we were in the car to fall asleep for his nap.
When I wasn’t babysitting I was making sure I was getting fit. My boyfriend, Neil, is also playing soccer this fall. Since we both needed to run every day, we would go to our high school track and complete fitness work together. Since he’s so fit, it made me push myself harder to get in shape and try to be just as quick as he was.
The thing I will miss the most when I’m away at school will be my dog, Jetta. We adopted her almost a year ago and she is awesome! She is an all-black German Shepherd and Labrador mix. She is always full of energy. Our family could not love her any more than we already do and I can’t wait for my dad to bring her to Athens!
I’m very excited to see what this upcoming season brings for Ohio Women’s Soccer. We have a great group of girls and an awesome coaching staff. We have so much potential and I can’t wait to get out on the field and start playing with everyone!
