Ohio vs. UNCG Notes
ATHENS, OHIO - The Ohio University soccer team kicks off the 2014 season Thursday, Aug. 14 when the UNCG Spartans come to Athens, Ohio for a preseason exhibition. The match is set to begin at noon at Peden Stadium.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
The Spartans come to Athens under first-year head coach Michaell Coll. Last season, UNCG went finished third in the Southern Conference last season after going 10-6-4 with a 5-2-3 conference record
LAST SEASON AGAINST THE SPARTANS
Last season the Bobcats traveled to Greensboro, N.C. to take on the Spartans in an exhibition that finished in a 0-0 tie. In that game, the `Cats outshot UNCG 8 to 4 and goalie Nicole Amari registered a save. Brieanna Charlebois also registered a game-high two shots.
HISTORICAL 2013 SEASON
Under now second-year head coach Aaron Rodgers, the Bobcats finished the 2013 regular season with their first non-losing record since 2009 (7-7-5) and posted five road victories - the most wins away from home for the program since 2004. Ohio tallied 26 goals in 2013 - the program's most in a decade.
This season, five of the team's top six goal scorers return in 2014 - including Liz Finley (Mason, Ohio), All-MAC Freshman Team selection Alexis Milesky (Plain City, Ohio), Holly Harris (Batavia, Ohio), Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Allison Cislo (Crownsville, Md.).
Defensively, Gabby Hausfeld (Cincinnati, Ohio) is back in the mix and will take on an increased leadership role as team captain. Tonya Frasik (Lebanon, Ohio), Grace Campbell (Wadsworth, Ohio) and Leah Sandercock (Strongsville, Ohio) also return to help slow down the opposition's attack while Nicole Amari (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Rachel Fryan (Racine, Wis.) will compete for the starting gig in goal.
The Bobcats will add nine new student-athletes to the mix in the fall, welcoming forward/midfielder Allison Curry (Fairfield, Ohio), defender Celeste Fushimi-Karns (Dublin, Ohio), defender Lauren Heger (Liberty Township, Ohio), defender Brooke Kemerer (Saginaw, MI ), forward Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.), goalkeeper Brooke Mauro (Cincinnati, Ohio), defender/midfielder Katie McCurley (Lake Zurich, Ill.), defender/midfielder Megan Niebuhr (Cincinnati, Ohio) and forward/midfielder Kelley Zebrowski (Powell, Ohio).
On Aug. 7, senior defender Gabby Hausfeld and sophomore forward Alexis Milesky were named to the 2014 College Sports Madness Mid-American Conference Preseason All-League Teams.
Hausfeld, a first team selection, played in all 20 games for the Bobcats in 2013. For the 2014 season, she will take on an increased leadership role as team captain.
Milesky a second team selection, made an immediate impact in her rookie campaign with the Bobcats, starting all 20 matches and tying for the team lead in points (11) and goals (four) while tying for third on the team in assists (three). Her 32 shots ranked second on the squad, with 13 of them coming on goal. Her season also led her to be named to the MAC All-Freshmen Team.
BOBCATS ON NATIONAL TV
The Bobcats will make two national broadcast appearances in 2014. Ohio is slated to battle the University of Kentucky on Aug. 31 in Lexington, Ky., in a contest that has been picked up by the SEC Network +.
Also, the Oct. 12 `Battle of the Bricks' match against Mid-American Conference East Division archrival Miami University has been tabbed as NSCAATV's College Game of the Week presented by Continental Tire. The contest is slated to kick-off at 1 p.m. ET at Chessa Field.
The Bobcats open the 2014 regular season when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. on Friday, Aug. 22 and Sunday, Aug 24 for the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. On Aug. 22 Ohio will take on Butler at 4 p.m. and on Aug. 24 the Bobcats will face Purdue at 4 p.m.
