Ohio Soccer Preseason Photo Gallery
ATHENS, Ohio – There are a lot of new things surrounding the Ohio University soccer program in 2013.
A new head coach in Aaron Rodgers.
Two new assistant coaches in Allison Whitworth and Elizabeth Woerle.
Nine newcomers on the roster.
What may initially catch the most attention, however, are the new uniforms the Bobcats will be debuting in 2013.
One year ago, the Ohio University Athletic Department renewed its apparel contract with Russell through 2017. Ohio’s relationship with the Russell brand dates all the way back to 2006. The 2013 season will mark the first time that the apparel company has provided uniforms to Ohio University’s soccer program. In fact, the Bobcats will be among the first programs in the country to wear Russell soccer gear this season.
“I think it is awesome that we are able to help the manufacturer develop top-of-the-line soccer uniforms,” Ohio head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “We’re happy with what they have come up with and what they have provided our team so that our student-athletes have an awesome uniform in which they will compete.”
The concept for Ohio’s uniforms came from the soccer program itself. The Bobcats generated a few ideas for the uniforms and passed these along to the apparel manufacturer, which created renderings for what the final product would look like. Once these were approved, the process was underway.
“For us, we are launching into the soccer category for the first time,” said Steve Kesterson, a Merchandising Manager at Russell. “Because of the success we’ve had with our sublimated products, we’ve felt that the soccer category is a no-brainer for us. With that said, we wanted our contract schools, like Ohio, to be the key components to highlight this new product offering.”
In addition to being made of a breathable fabric, what is unique about Ohio’s jerseys this season is the sublimation technique which was used. Instead of having numbers and patches (such as the Ohio and Mid-American Conference logos) sewn on top of the finished product, the graphics will be printed with a heat transfer process which applies the images into the fabric itself.
“Russell is a great partner with Ohio University,” said Dan Hauser, Ohio’s Senior Associate AD for External Operations. “The company provides outstanding products for many of our teams and once it announced plans for a soccer line, we were very interested because of the quality of products which have been provided in the past. Russell also has a great working relationship in that it produces products which match us (Ohio University) as a customer.”
The Bobcats will make their home debut in their new uniforms Friday, Aug. 23 against Indiana. Ohio and the Hoosiers will kick off from Chessa Field at 4 p.m. The Bobcats will then conclude the weekend with a home date against Wright State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
