ATHENS, Ohio - With the 2013 regular season just two days away, the Ohio University women's soccer team has been selected to finish third in the Mid-American Conference's East Division according to a preseason poll of the league's head coaches. The Bobcats are tabbed to finish ahead of divisional rivals Akron, Buffalo, and Bowling Green.
Miami was selected to finish first in the MAC East with 66 total points (10 first-place votes). Kent State was not far behind, collecting 62 points (two first-place votes). The RedHawks were also picked to win the 2013 MAC Tournament title, as eight of the league's 12 head coaches voted for Miami to be crowned tournament champion at season's end.
Ohio earned 40 points in the poll, finishing ahead of East Division rivals Akron (34), Buffalo (33), and Bowling Green (16). Ohio's 40 points also tabbed the `Cats to end the season ahead of West Division schools Western Michigan (29) and Northern Illinois (23).
Toledo was picked to win the West Division with 58 points and four first-place votes. Not far behind were Eastern Michigan (52 points; four first-place votes) and Central Michigan (50 points; three first-place votes).
The Bobcats return seven starters and 14 letterwinners from a 2012 team which finished 8-10-1 to earn eighth in the league. The Bobcats' season came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at eventual tournament-champion Miami in the 2012 MAC Tournament.
Ohio opens the 2013 season with three home matches at Chessa Field. The Bobcats kick things off this weekend against Indiana (Friday) and Wright State (Sunday).
