Matches 1 and 2 | Gametracker (Indiana) | Gametracker (Wright State)
ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio University women’s soccer team officially opens the 2013 season in Athens this weekend, as the Bobcats are set to host Indiana Friday and Wright State Sunday. The Green and White will take on the Hoosiers at 4 p.m. before ending the weekend against the Raiders at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at Chessa Field.
In their last game action, the Bobcats drew UNC Greensboro on the road in an Aug. 15 exhibition match. Ohio controlled much of the game, outshooting the Spartans by a 2-1 margin (8-4) and recording three times as many shots on goal (6-2) as its opponents. Holly Harris (Batavia, Ohio) and Brieanna Charlebois (London, Ontario) each registered a game-high two shots.
At both matches this weekend, Bobcat fans will have the opportunity to enter their names into a raffle drawing to win two tickets to the United States Men's National Team match against Mexico in Columbus on Sept. 10. The raffle drawing will take place during Ohio's Sept. 8 home match against Morehead State. In order to win the prize, fans who entered in the raffle must be present at this match.
There will also be a post-match autograph session following Friday's contest against Indiana.
SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
Indiana enters the weekend with a 0-0 record, as Friday's match at Ohio will serve as its 2013 season-opener. The Hoosiers return eight starters and 23 letterwinners from last year's team which went 9-9-1 (4-7 conference) and tied for eighth in the Big Ten. Indiana lost star player Orianica Velasquez (26 career goals) to graduation at the end of last season.
OHIO - INDIANA SERIES HISTORY
Friday's match will be the third all-time meeting between Ohio and Indiana. The Hoosiers hold a 2-0 advantage in the series, having scored nine goals against the Bobcats while allowing just three. The `Cats have never played Indiana in Athens.
The two programs last met on Aug. 19 of the 2012 season in Bloomington, Ind. Ohio trailed 1-0 early before goals by Cat Rogers and Maggie Murnane gave the `Cats a 2-1 lead in the 28th minute. Indiana was able to tie things up one minute later and would ultimately take a lead it would never relinquish in the 44th minute.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Wright State also enters the first weekend of the season with a 0-0 record, as the Raiders will begin 2013 at IPFW on Friday. WSU ended 2012 with a 9-5-6 (2-2-3 conference) record in 2012. The Raiders were selected to finish second in the Horizon League in the conference's annual media poll released Wednesday.
OHIO - WRIGHT STATE SERIES HISTORY
Sunday's match will be the 11th all-time meeting between Ohio and Wright State. The Raiders hold a narrow 6-4 edge and have won the last three matches in the series. Ohio is 1-4 in five matches between the programs played in Athens.
Ohio opened the 2012 season at Wright State and was edged late, falling 1-0 to the Raiders courtesy of a goal by Emilie Fillion in the 87th minute. Mattie Liston made five saves in the match.
THIRD IN PRESEASON POLL
In a preseason poll of the Mid-American Conference's head coaches, Ohio was selected to finish third in the East Division ahead of Akron, Buffalo, and Bowling Green. Toledo was tabbed to win the West and Miami was picked to win the East and the MAC Tournament.
A NEW ERA BEGINS
The 2013 season will mark the beginning of Aaron Rodgers' career as a head coach. The Texas native spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach in charge of goalkeepers at the University of Kentucky.
COACHING STAFF BRINGS PRO EXPERIENCE
With the addition of Elizabeth Woerle as a second assistant coach, the Ohio University soccer team completed a unique coaching situation. The Bobcat coaching staff is the only one in the Mid-American Conference which is comprised entirely of former professional players.
MURNANE NAMED TO CSM PRESEASON ALL-MAC TEAM
Senior midfielder Maggie Murnane was named to the CollegeSportsMadness.com Preseason All-Mid-American Conference Team on Aug. 6. Murnane started all 19 games of the 2012 season, scoring two goals and dishing out two assists.
Ohio opens the 2013 regular season at home on Friday, August 23 against Indiana. The `Cats will then host Wright State (Aug. 25) and DePaul (Aug. 30) to wrap up their longest homestand of the season. Ohio has never before opened a season with three straight home matches.
On June 25, freshman Alexis Milesky won a national championship with her U18 Elite Clubs National League side, the Ohio Premier Eagles. Milesky scored the game-winning goal in the 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rush. Her goal was assisted by future Mid-American Conference foe Brooke Maletic (Toledo).
