ATHENS, Ohio - Erika Schmitt's two game-winning goals in the opening weekend of MAC play has earned the junior midfielder MAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week Honors. The award was announced Monday morning following Schmitt's exceptional performance against Kent State and Buffalo. Against Kent State on Friday evening, Schmitt (Wyoming, Ohio) fired a close-range shot past the keeper for a goal in the second overtime of Ohio's first MAC contest of 2007. The goal not only gave the Bobcats a conference victory, but their first win of the season. "Erika has been our most consistent offensive player this year," said head coach Stacy Strauss. "I'm proud to see her recognized by the conference. She led us to two wins this weekend but you could see her growing and building as the season has progressed. She has been setting up opportunities for us all season long." Schmitt scored another goal against Buffalo, this time in the 57th minute when senior Danielle Young played a Bulls clearing pass back into the keeper's box and Schmitt controlled the ball, dribbled past the Buffalo keeper and slid in a shot to put Ohio up 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. A late Buffalo goal closed the score to 2-1 but the Bulls could not find an equalizer before time expired and Schmitt's goal proved to be the game-winner. Schmitt, who is a journalism major at Ohio, scored just one goal in her previous two seasons with the Bobcats but leads the team with seven points on three goals and one assist in 2007. She scored her first goal of the season in Ohio's 4-2 loss at Kentucky. ---------------------- Joe Waltasti is the women's soccer contact for the Ohio media relations office.
