A Sit Down With Junior Bobcat Callie Broomfield
Oct. 3, 2006 Callie Broomfield (Bay Village, Ohio) is a midfielder and 2006 co-captain for the Ohio women's soccer team. She recently sat down and talked about Ohio's fast start in the MAC, playing for Head Coach Stacy Strauss and more.
Question: You were named a co-captain for the 2006 season. What was it like to earn that honor? Answer: It's a great honor because I think there are a lot of people that have stepped up as upper classmen. One of the things we've focused on was being a group leading the team, so it's nice to know that it's not just me and (co-captain Tiffany Horvath). Q: The team is off to a 3-1 start in MAC play. What are this team's goals right now? A: To gain back the respect. My freshman year we won the MAC and I think last year, not to say it was a fluke, but we've always been a dominant team. (Our goals) are to gain that title back and to take each game one at a time. Q: You were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll last season. How hard is it to excel in your classes with a full soccer schedule? A: It's tough. You definitely have to plan out your course load and other groups you're involved in. You have to have good time management, but I think our team does a good job. It's definitely something you learn. Q: Your mother and father both attended school at Ohio and your father played on the first rugby team here. How much did your parents impact your decision to attend Ohio? A: They had a big impact because they raved to me how much they loved it and the different things they were involved in. My mom worked at the Baker Center too so that's something I wanted to get involved in. They had a huge impact. I wanted to stay in-state where they could come watch me play and it's cool knowing they went here and they love to come back. They played a big part. Q: What is it like playing for Coach Strauss? A: It's good. It's a good balance between the coach who gets on you, she's tough, but then is understanding of different things that are going on with your life in schoolwork and other obligations. It's nice to have her. I think she understands because she was a collegiate athlete as well. Q: What do you enjoy doing when you're not playing soccer? A: I like to play basketball although we don't have much time this quarter. I'm in University Program Council so I like to attend concerts, comedians and speakers. I like to just hang out with the girls on the team and other friends too. Q: What would be your dream job? A: I'm actually thinking about law school, believe it or not. That's my current "what I would like to get into." I turned 21 last Tuesday and my mom bought me an LSAT book to start studying. Right now my goal is to go to law school but if not, if I stay with PR, I would like to work for a non-profit organization. Q: Is there one soccer match throughout your career that sticks with you the most? A: My junior and senior year of high school we won state and we got to play in the (Columbus) Crew Stadium. My junior year state final really stays with me, we really had to earn it. I know (Tiffany Horvath and Molly Fallon) also were there at the Crew Stadium my junior year so it's nice to think about that too. Q: What do you like about attending Ohio University? A: Soccer is a huge part of it because it does take up so much time and I love the girls. I like the scenery and the campus life. The campus is small and you can walk everywhere. A lot of people complain that there aren't a lot of things to do here but you can really get involved on campus life and through that you hit all the areas. Q: What is your favorite sport outside of soccer? A: I'd have to say college basketball. Q: Do you have a favorite movie? A: My first favorite movie and still one of my favorites is "The Bodyguard" with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. Q: What television show do you never miss? A: Grey's Anatomy Q: What are your favorite pizza toppings? A: I can speak for me and my roommates, we love buffalo chicken pizza. Q: What kind of music do you listen to? A: I listen to a variety. It depends on the situation. Right now I really like the Dave Mathews Band so I've been to a lot of their concerts. Q: Do you have a favorite book or author? A: I recently read Something Borrowed and right now that's my favorite book. I hope to get into Something Blue, which is the next book. |
