ATHENS, Ohio - A pair of first place teams will battle this weekend when Ohio (2-5-2, 2-0 MAC) hosts Ball State (5-4-0, 2-0 MAC) at 4 p.m. on Friday. Both teams enter the game with perfect 2-0 records in the MAC but only one team will still be undefeated in conference play after Ohio's third MAC contest of the season. The Bobcats play their fourth conference game at 1 p.m. on Sunday when Miami comes to Chessa Field. The Redhawks (3-4-2, 1-1 MAC) lost their MAC opener to Eastern Michigan but rebounded with their first conference victory of the 2007 season last Sunday against Central Michigan. Ohio's remained undefeated in conference play following a pair of 2-1 victories against Kent State and Buffalo last weekend. It took double overtime to defeat the Golden Flashes, but Erika Schmitt (Wyoming) found the back of the net in the 104th minute to give Ohio its first victory of the season. Schmitt scored another game-winning goal against Buffalo and her efforts in the first weekend of MAC play earned the junior midfielder the MAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week Award. Schmitt leads the Bobcats with seven points - five coming in the last two games - on two goals and one assist. Schmitt and fellow midfielder Lindsey Price (West Chester) combined to take 16 corner kicks last weekend, an indicator of Ohio's constant offensive pressure. Kent State and Buffalo goalkeepers were forced to make 16 saves as well as the Bobcats racked up 38 shots and 23 shots on goal in two games. Ohio's contests on Friday and Sunday against Ball State and Miami, respectively, are the last home games of the Bobcats' current four-game homestand. Ohio will host just two more games at Chessa Field in 2007 following this weekend. The Bobcats travel to Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan next weekend in Ohio's first conference road games of the season. ---------------------- Joe Waltasti is the women's soccer contact for the Ohio media relations office.
