Four Bobcats Named to All-MAC Teams
Nov. 9, 2007
ATHENS, Ohio - Four Ohio women's soccer players were named to the three All-MAC teams, the conference announced on Thursday evening. Junior forward Erika Schmitt (Wyoming) was named to the All-MAC First-Team while sophomore defender Rachael Goudling (Toronto, Ont.) and senior forward Lindsey Price were placed on the All-MAC Second-Team. Freshman midfielder Jackie Hanson (LaGrange, Ill.) was selected to the All-MAC Freshman Team for her efforts in her first season in Athens. Schmitt, Ohio's leading goal scorer with seven, knocked in four game-winning goals in her first season up top for the Bobcats. Originally a defender in her first two seasons with Ohio, Schmitt's move to forward was seamless as her speed and accuracy led directly to four of Ohio's five victories. Schmitt was named the MAC Player of the Week twice this season, the first coming after her pair of game-winners against Kent State and Buffalo and again in the final week of the season for her two goal, one assist performance against Akron. Price started 73 out of 74 games played in her stellar four-year career, including 57 straight starts dating back to 2004. The senior finished her Bobcat career with 13 goals and 14 assists, both in Ohio's top-10 all-time. Goulding, an All-MAC Freshman Team and All-MAC First-Team selection a year ago, was an anchor of the Bobcat defense in 2007. The sophomore led the Bobcats with assists this season and her deep ball ability fueled Ohio's offense. Goudling also recorded a leaping header goal off a corner kick as her athleticism was used on set pieces including corners and free kicks. Hanson is the third Bobcat named to the All-MAC Freshman Team in the past two years. Gouldling and forward Amy Lower were selected last season. Hanson made her first start just four games into the season against Kentucky and secured the full-time starting position in Ohio's MAC opener against Kent State. Hanson played in 18 of 19 games this season, one missed due to injury, a started 12 of those contests. The LaGrange, Ill. native scored one goal this season, coming in Ohio's 1-1 draw at Eastern Michigan. Toledo's Molly Cornwell took home MAC Player of the Year honors after leading the conference in both goals (14) and assists (nine), both UT records for a single season. Cornwell's 37 total points ranked her 15th nationally. Miami's Sara Lund (seven goals, five assists) was named Freshman of the Year and Ball State head coach Michelle Salmons earned Coach of the Year honors after her team secured its second consecutive MAC regular season championship. Salmons won Coach of the Year last season as well, just the third time in history a MAC coach has won the honor in two straight years. Ball State will play host to the semifinal and championship games of the MAC Tournament this weekend with No. 2 Toledo squaring off against No. 3 Northern Illinois and No. 1 Ball State battling No. 4 Bowling Green on Friday afternoon. The championship game will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Ball State Soccer Field. ---------------------- Joe Waltasti is the women's soccer contact for the Ohio media relations office.
