GREENVILLE, N.C. – Just two days into the 2013 season, the Ohio University Softball Team is already on a three-game winning streak. The Bobcats collected two wins in two tries during the second day of competition at the 2013 East Carolina University Pirate Classic on Saturday, taking down Cleveland State (3-1) and host ECU (8-1) to begin the campaign with a 3-1 record.

Raven King (Alpine, Utah) had a very strong offensive day on Saturday, leading the team with a .600 average (3-5) while slugging at a rate of .800. The junior was one of six Bobcats who collected two or more hits on the afternoon, as DJ Engelman (Mason, Ohio), Caitlin Colvin (Bonney Lake, Wash.), Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.), Alexia Cortez (Beaufort, S.C.), and Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas) each added two of their own. The ‘Cats hit .250 as a team on Saturday, belting two doubles, one triple, and one home run.

Ohio’s pitchers held opposing batters to a .218 average on the day, allowing 12 hits and just three walks while striking out 12 en route to two complete-game victories.

Ohio picked up win No. 2 of the weekend in the early afternoon on Saturday, beating Cleveland State by a final score of 3-1. The Bobcats trailed early, yielding one run in the bottom of the first inning before shutting out the Vikings the rest of the way to earn the victory.

In the bottom of the first, Susan Knight tripled to left field and ultimately came around to score when Erica McNew lined out, giving Cleveland State an early 1-0 advantage. Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio) settled in from this point, going the distance and only allowing four more hits and zero additional runs throughout the rest of the game.

The Bobcats only scored in the fifth inning of the first game, but that was all it took to claim the victory. King began the inning by singling through the left side. Biz Eyrise (Brookfield, Wis.) pinch ran for the junior and eventually worked her way around to score when Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, Md.) reached on a fielder’s choice. A double by Cortez then brought in two more runs, setting the ‘Cats up for a 3-1 victory.

The Bobcats got off to a very fast start in the second game of the afternoon, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning and never once looking back. Cortez struck out in the first at-bat of the game but was able to make it to first on a dropped ball by the catcher. She then stole second and scored when Walker singled and advanced to second on the throw. Gellerman singled, driving in one more run, Colvin walked, and then King reached first on a nice sacrifice bunt to load the bases. A double to deep right field by Engelman drove in two runs and chased the first pitcher out of the circle early.

Timmie Rappe (Wheaton, Ill.) drove in the final run of the inning, grounding out to second base to bring King around to score.

ECU scored its lone run of the game when Kristi Oshiro tripled down the right field line and was brought around to score courtesy of an Alex Fieldhouse single. Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) was able to shut the Pirates down from this point onward, notching five strikeouts over the course of the final four innings.

Ohio added two runs in the fifth courtesy of a single by Colvin and good heads-up base running by Eyrise to score unearned due to a throwing error by the shortstop. The ‘Cats then tallied their final run of the day when Colvin blasted her second home run of the season—a solo shot to center—to make it 8-1.

The Bobcats will next be in action on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Rider. This game will serve as Ohio’s last action at the 2013 ECU Pirate Classic.
