LAS VEGAS – The Ohio University Softball Team extended its winning streak to seven games with a win over Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday afternoon, but this run eventually came to an end when No. 18 UCLA took down the Bobcats in their final game of the tournament.

On Sunday, Ohio took down ULM by a final score of 15-6 in just five innings before falling to No. 18 UCLA, 11-2, in six frames.

Ohio ended the tournament with a 3-1 mark through four games and is currently 7-2 on the season, a mark which is the program’s best start to a season since 1994.

Caitlin Colvin (Bonney Lake, Wash.) had a huge game for the Bobcats against ULM, blasting two home runs and driving in four to score. The senior went 2-3 during the game and also earned one walk. Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, Md.) also hit a long ball during the win, cranking her third home run of the season.

The game was exciting right from the start, as the teams combined to score four runs in the first inning. Following a Timmie Rappe (Wheaton, Ill.) single to the left side of the infield, Colvin stepped up with two outs and hit a pitch over the left center field wall to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bobcats. ULM answered right back in the bottom of the frame, scoring when one Warhawk stole home and another drove in the tying run with a single to left field.

Ohio scored three runs in the top of the second frame to take a 5-2 advantage. Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio) walked with the bases loaded to bring in the first run and Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.) hit a two-run single to bring around Alexia Cortez (Beaufort, S.C.) and Alyssa Wolfe (Junction City, Ohio) to score.

The Warhawks answered back in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs to tie the game at 5-5.

The Bobcats would tack on three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead for good before scoring seven in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Gellerman (2), Gebele (1), Raven King (1), Alexandria Basquez (1), and Wolfe (2) all drove in runs in the top of the fifth inning.

In their second game of the afternoon and final contest of the tournament, Ohio fell to No. 18 UCLA in six innings. Facing a 2-0 deficit in the first inning, Ohio answered back immediately to level the scores in the bottom of the frame. With two outs in the inning, Gellerman hit a single to center field and was brought around to score when Colvin hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season.

The Bruins scored five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 7-2 lead and would later add four more in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the 11-2 victory. Stephany LaRosa had a strong day for UCLA, hitting two home runs and bringing five around to score. Paige McDuffee was difficult to solve in the pitching circle, as she allowed just two hits in five innings of work and struck out four Bobcat batters.

The Bobcats will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 22 at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Frost Classic. At the tournament, Ohio will match up against North Carolina Central, Niagara, Lipscomb, Boston College, and Tennessee Tech.
