HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Ohio Softball dropped both games of its doubleheader at Marshall on Wednesday, falling by final scores of 17-6 and 10-0. The Bobcats belted two home runs in the first game of the afternoon but encountered a strong pitching performance in the second.
The first game of the doubleheader got off to a roaring start. With one runner on and two outs, Raven King (Alpine, Utah) stepped up to the plate and blasted a home run to make it 2-0. Marshall was able to answer right back in the bottom of the frame, plating three when Alysia Hively hit a three-run shot to right center.
Facing an early 3-2 deficit, Alexandria Basquez (Elk Grove, Calif.) led off the top of the second inning with a single to center field. She was driven in just one play later when Chelsea Hortman cranked her fifth home run of the season, making it 4-3 in favor of the Bobcats (15-20). Starting pitcher Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio) settled down well after the first inning, not allowing any more runs for the Thundering Herd in the second and third innings.
The fourth inning proved to be a challenge, as Marshall was able to score seven runs in the frame to take a 10-4 advantage. Alianna Telles and Rebecca Gamby hit singles to drive in the first two runs of the inning and were promptly followed by a grand slam from Hively. The home run was Hively’s fourth of the season.
Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.) sparked a fifth-inning rally by belting a double to center field to bring home Alexis Joseph (Alvin, Texas) and Jillian Van Wagnen (Lorain, Ohio). Marshall was able to put the game away in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven more runs. With the bases loaded, Jessica Ferrick blasted the Thundering Herd’s second grand slam of the game, putting the contest out of reach.
