ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio University softball team (19-22) ran into a tremendous pitching performance by one of the NCAA’s top strikeout leaders on Wednesday night, falling twice to visiting Marshall (29-17) by final scores of 4-0 and 3-2. Andi Williamson pitched a complete-game shutout in the first contest of the evening and then came on to earn the win in the second. The senior struck out 28 batters in 13 innings of work en route to earning two wins.

Ohio pitchers put together two solid outings as well, allowing just a combined five earned runs and 11 hits. Marshall was able to score these runs at the most opportune of times, however, in order to pick up two straight wins over the Bobcats.

Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.) was the lone Bobcat to record two hits on Wednesday, as she went 2-6 at the plate. Lex Cortez (Beaufort, S.C.) collected Ohio’s sole extra base hit of the evening, a rocket of a double which banged off of the right centerfield wall in the first inning of the second game.

Inside the pitching circle, Savannah Jo Dorsey (Grove City, Ohio) and Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) each kept their ERAs at 4.00 or below. McClary struck out nine while Dorsey set a new career high with 11 strikeouts in the second game of the day.

Game One: Ohio 0, Marshall 4
WP: Andi Williamson (25-13)
LP: Lauren McClary (8-12)
S: None
HR: Savanah Webster (3)

Marshall took an early lead, plating three runs in the top of the second inning. With one runner on third, Savanah Webster singled through the left side, putting Marshall on the board with the opening run of the afternoon. A few batters later, Kaelynn Greene roped a two-RBI single to put the ‘Herd up 3-0.

McClary bounced back well in the top of the third inning, striking out the side in order.

In the top of the fourth, Webster continued her strong day at the plate, hitting a solo shot deep over the right center field wall to make it 4-0 in favor of the visitors. The home run was her third of the season.

Andi Williamson hit her stride in the middle stages of the game, striking out nine Bobcats in a row during a stretch which spanned the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

Game Two: Ohio 2, Marshall 3
WP: Andi Williamson (26-13)
LP: Savannah Jo Dorsey (9-8)
S: None
HR: Adrienne Gebele (10)

Cortez got off to a great start in the beginning of the second game. In the top half of the first inning, the freshman made a diving catch in shallow centerfield to record the third out of the inning with runners on second and third. Then, to lead off the bottom of the frame, she hit a deep shot to right center for a standup double. Cortez was then brought around to score with two outs when Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, Md.) hit a home run over the right-field wall to give the ‘Cats an early 2-0 lead.

Marshall answered back in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs in an odd series of events which included a single, a passed ball, and an error on a close play at home plate.

Dorsey settled down very well following Marshall’s three-run second inning, allowing just three hits the rest of the way.

Ohio will next be in action on Thursday, April 18 against Wright State. The Bobcats will host the Raiders in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
