ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio softball team lost 6-2 to Akron in the opener of a two-game MAC weekend series.
The Bobcats (18-23, 7-6 MAC) were first on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the first inning but were unable to score again in the game.
Michelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) picked up the loss for the Bobcats, falling to 12-9 on the season. Sauter pitched the first five innings of the game, allowing six earned runs and nine hits. She also struck out three batters. Candace Saucedo (Ontario, Calif.) put in one inning of work, allowing just one hit.
Shalene Petrich (Chehalis, Wash.) scored the `Cats first run after hitting a single up the middle, stealing third and scoring on an error by Akron's third baseman. Petrich's steal is her 21st of the season, tying for 10th place on Ohio's all-time career steals list.
Pinch-runner Danielle Kelley (Franklin, Tenn.) scored Ohio's second run on a RBI single to right field by Kristen Salvatore (Kirtland, Ohio).
Ohio had seven hits in the game with two coming from Marian Davis (Brighton, Mich.). Davis was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Petrich, Salvatore, Debbie Szalejko (Beavercreek, Ohio),Meagan McCutcheon (Mogadore, Ohio) and Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska) had single hits.
"We came out hitting really well," said Head Coach Jill Matyuch. "But when we get runners on we need to do a better job of capitalizing on that. Individually, we need to do the little things one pitch at a time."
"Tomorrow I'd like to see us exude more confidence."
The two teams will play again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Lee Jackson Field in Akron.
