April 26, 2006

Box Score

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Shannon Weidner (Pickerington, Ohio) homered twice and Alicia Catlette (Mogadore, Ohio) went deep once in leading the Ohio softball team to a split with Youngstown State. The Bobcats lost the opener 8-6 but rebounded to take the back end 4-2.

Ohio won the second game behind three combined solo home runs from Weidner and Catlette. Weidner went long in the second and seventh innings while Catlette homered in the fourth. Weidner, Catlette and Robin Miller (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), who homered in the doubleheader opener, now share the team-lead with three home runs each.

Weidner's first blast gave Ohio a 1-0 lead and Catlette long ball put the Bobcats up 2-0. In the fifth inning, consecutive singles from Amanda Sacks (Chugiak, Alaska) and Emily Futscher (Cincinnati, Ohio) put runners on first and second. After Sacks and Futscher both moved up on a wild pitch, Miller plated Sacks with an RBI groundout to give the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage.

Ohio saw its lead cut to one after Youngstown State scored two in the bottom half of the fifth. Weidner's second home run gave Ohio some breathing room and gave the game its final 4-2 margin.

Natalie Armstrong (Murrysville, Pa.) picked up the win for the Bobcats, going 4.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits. Candace Warden (Hagerstown, Md.) earned her second save of the season, pitching the final 2.2 innings and surrendering only one hit while striking out four.

The Bobcat offense came out firing in the opening game, scoring five runs in the first three innings. Kelly Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) got things started, putting Ohio in front 1-0 with an RBI double in the first frame.

After the Penguins evened the game with a run in their half of the first, the Bobcats put three runs on the board in the second inning behind the power of Miller. A Sacks single and a Futscher double put two runners on for Miller, who cleared the bases with her third home run of the year to give Ohio a 4-1 lead.

Youngstown State countered with four runs in its half of the second but the Bobcats squared the game at five with a single tally in the third. Weidner singled to lead off the frame with pinch-runner Danielle Kelley (Franklin, Tenn.) advancing to second on a Sacks groundout. One out later, Miller laced a double down the left-field line to score Kelley and even the score.

After allowing two runs in the fourth inning, the Bobcats trailed 7-5 but closed to within one run in the sixth frame. Debbie Szalejko (Beavercreek, Ohio) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a Marian Davis (Brighton, Mich.) single. A walk to Catlette loaded the bases and Rodriguez drove in Szalejko with an RBI groundout to shortstop.

The Penguins matched Ohio's run with a tally of their own in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-6. The Bobcats put runners on second and third in the seventh inning but were unable to score.

Katlyn Mallette (Taunton, Mass.) took the loss for Ohio, throwing four innings in relief and allowing three runs and seven hits. Starter Michelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) went two innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.

The Bobcats move to 24-31 following today's action.

Ohio returns home and to Mid-American Conference play when it hosts Western Michigan Friday in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
