KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Ohio University softball team (24-23, 7-9 Mid-American Conference) picked up a split on the road Friday afternoon, earning one win and one loss against the Western Michigan Broncos. The Bobcats tied a MAC record on Friday, hitting their 70th home run of the season to match Ball State’s mark set during the 2012 season.

Ohio picked up a 7-5 victory in the first game of the day before seeing its late comeback effort fall short in game two, losing 4-3. Three Bobcats recorded multiple hits throughout the day, with Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.) leading the way with three. Two of Gellerman’s hits were home runs, bringing her season total to 20, a mark which co-sets an individual MAC single-season record with Jennifer Gilbert of Ball State.

Game One: Ohio 7, Western Michigan 5
WP: Lauren McClary (10-12)
LP: Shemberger (7-14)

HR: Caitlin Colvin (18), Stamm (2)

A big second inning gave the ‘Cats an early 3-0 lead in the first game of the afternoon. With the bases loaded and just one out, an Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.) double down the left field line brought in the first two runs of the game. Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas) then hit a grounder to the left side of the infield, forcing the third baseman to make an error and bringing Raven King (Alpine, Utah) around to score.

Western Michigan (14-26, 5-9 MAC) scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to get on the board. The Broncos then took the lead for the first time of the afternoon in the bottom of the next frame, plating four runs to take a 5-3 advantage.

Ohio pulled level in the top of fifth inning, scoring two runs to deadlock the contest at five runs apiece. Erin Lashley (Pickerington, Ohio) alertly scored on a passed ball to pull the ‘Cats within one run (5-4) before King was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing Biz Eyrise (Brookfield, Wis.) around to score.

The ‘Cats capitalized on four Bronco errors in the top of the sixth to take a one-run lead before Caitlin Colvin (Bonney Lake, Wash.) put an exclamation point on the victory with a solo shot in the top of the seventh inning.

Game Two: Ohio 3, Western Michigan 4
WP: Shepeck (3-5)
LP: Lauren McClary (10-13)

HR: Lauren Gellerman 2 (20)

Gellerman had a great showing in the second game of the day, going 3-3 from the plate with two home runs. The senior slugger accounted for 50 percent of Ohio’s hits in game two.

Following a Gellerman solo shot in the top of the first inning, Western Michigan tied it up at one run apiece in the bottom of the third frame. Gellerman then gave Ohio its second lead of the game in the top of the fourth, hitting another solo shot to make it 2-1 in favor of the visiting Bobcats.

Western scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, capitalizing on four hits and three Bobcat errors. The ‘Cats fought back, scoring one run in the top of the seventh when Dalton hit a two-out double to center field. The Broncos were able close things out from this point, however, recording a strikeout to end the game.

Ohio will next be in action on Saturday at Northern Illinois. First pitch between the Bobcats and Huskies is set for 3 p.m.
