Ohio Softball Splits Doubleheader at NIU
April 27, 2007
DeKALB, Ohio - The Ohio softball team split a doubleheader at MAC rival Northern Illinois on Friday. The Bobcats won game one, 3-0, but lost game two, 2-1, in nine innings. The Bobcats now have a 21-25 overall record and Northern Illinois is 19-22 overall. Both teams have an even 8-8 record in the MAC. "We played superb defense in the first game. It was simply a fun game to watch," said Head Coach Jill Matyuch. "We executed with diving outfield plays, a first and third out, a double play and just good routine defense. Offensively, we struck first and that set the tone for the rest of the game. We also competed very well in game two, but the outcome just wasn't there." Junior Alicia Catlette (Mogadore, Ohio) led the way for Ohio going 3-for-5 with one double. Catlette was 2-for-2 in game one and 1-for-3 in game two. Senior Debbie Szalejko (Beavercreek, Ohio) went 3-for-8, extending her hitting streak to a season-high nine games. Senior Marion Davis (Brighton, Mich.) went 2-for-6 with two RBI while freshman Candace Saucedo (Ontario, Calif.) scored two runs, both in game one. Game One The Bobcats got on the scoreboard early on with two runs in the top half of the first inning. Davis hit a two-RBI single with one out to score Saucedo and freshman Shalene Petrich (Chehalis, Wash.) for a 2-0 Ohio lead.
Both teams were scoreless in innings two, three and four. Ohio stopped the scoring drought in the fifth inning when senior Kelly Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) hit a RBI single with two outs to score Saucedo, who reached on a fielder choice, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third before scoring. Game Two Both teams were scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings. Northern Illinois's Bailey Ouellette hit a home run in the ninth inning for the finish. Sauter and senior Natalie Armstrong (Murrysville, Pa.) pitched for Ohio. Sauter started and pitched the first three innings, allowing one run and two hits. Armstrong took the loss and pitched the remaining five innings, allowing one run and three hits. Pitcher Kate Greenough (12-11) got the win for the Huskies. She pitched a complete game, allowing one run and five hits. The Bobcats continue their weekend road trip with single games against Western Michigan on Saturday and Sunday. |
