DEKALB, Ill. – The Ohio University softball team (24-24, 7-10 Mid-American Conference) dropped its series opener at Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon, falling by a final score of 2-0. The Bobcats outhit the Huskies by a 5-3 margin but were unable to overcome timely hitting by the hosts in the loss.

WP: Norton (11-5)
LP: Lauren McClary (10-14)
HR: Sheppard, Barnett
Chelsea Hortman (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded the first hit of the afternoon, getting on base with a single to left field in the top of the second inning. Following a selfless sacrifice bunt by Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, Md.), Hortman advanced to second. The senior would later steal third base with two outs, but she was ultimately left stranded.
Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) retired the first seven batters she saw in the game and didn’t allow a hit until NIU (19-28, 9-8 MAC) collected two in the bottom of the fourth inning. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, these two hits were back-to-back solo home runs, giving the Huskies the only runs they’d need to score on the afternoon.
In the top of the seventh inning, Ohio threatened to score when Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.) slapped a single to right field. Tessa Bailey (Acworth, Ga.) followed one out later with a single and would eventually advance to second base on an outfield error. On the same play, Dalton advanced to third and was narrowly thrown out at home plate to end the game.
Ohio will next be in action on Sunday afternoon at Northern Illinois. First pitch between the Bobcats and Huskies is set for 2 p.m.
