Ohio Splits Doubleheader with Central Michigan

ATHENS, Ohio - Freshman pitcher Candace Saucedo (Ontario, Calif.) struck out three batters and allowed only two hits in a 5-4 game two Ohio victory as the Bobcats split with Central Michigan in a doubleheader on Friday. The Chippewas won game one, 5-4. "Central Michigan is a strong team," said Head Coach Jill Matyuch. "We could have thrown in the towel after they came out in the first inning of game one and scored four runs, but we didn't. We could have thrown in the towel when they came back in the seventh inning of game two, but we didn`t. I'm very proud of my team's effort today." Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska) led the way for Ohio, going 3-for-4 with one run. Marian Davis (Brighton, Mich.) went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Allie Farrington (Wilton, NH) and Kristen Salvatore (Kirtland, Ohio) both batted .333. Farrington had a team-high three RBI and Salvatore scored two runs. Central Michigan gained a quick advantage in game one, taking a 4-1 lead in the first inning. Debbie Szalejko (Beavercreek, Ohio) led off the inning for Ohio with a double to left field and scored on an RBI single by Farrington. Both teams were scoreless in innings two and three, but Ohio made a comeback and tied the game 4-4 with one run in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth. Davis led off the fourth inning for Ohio with a single to left field and was batted home on an RBI double by Saucedo.
Szalejko and Salvatore scored two runs in the fifth inning for the Bobcats. Farrington hit an RBI double to score Szalejko, while Salvatore was batted in on a single by Davis. Lindsey Calme led off the seventh inning for the Chippewas with a triple and scored two batters later on a fielder's choice to win the game. Michelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) took the loss for Ohio, pitching a complete game, allowing five runs and five hits. Sauter (15-11) also struck out three batters. Ohio got the early advantage in game two, taking a 3-1 in the first inning. Kelly Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) and Danielle Kelley (Franklin, Tenn.) scored on an RBI double by Meagan McCutcheon (Mogadore, Ohio) and Davis scored a batter later on a fielder's choice. Central Michigan scored another run in the top of the third and hit two home runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, but Ohio responded with two runs in its half of seventh for the victory. Waters led off the seventh with a double to center field. Salvatore hit a single and Waters advanced to third. Farrington reached on a fielder's choice with an RBI to score Waters. Salvatore then scored on an error by Central Michigan's left fielder. The Bobcats continue their homestand tomorrow against Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. |
