ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio Softball hosted “Strike Out Breast Cancer Day” on Saturday, welcoming Kent State to the Ohio Softball Field for an important MAC East clash. The Bobcats edged the Golden Flashes in a close contest, winning by a final score of 3-2.

Lauren McClary picked up her 17th win of the season, going the full seven innings while allowing only three hits and two earned runs. The freshman struck out six batters and showed solid control, only walking two.

The game was a pitching duel right from the start, as the two teams combined for just two hits in the first four innings. McClary (Pasadena, Texas) got off to a great start, striking out four while allowing just one hit and two walks in these first four innings.

Ohio (27-27, 13-8 MAC) struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.) led off the inning with a single to third base. Fleet-footed Tessa Bailey (Acworth, Ga.) came on to pinch run at the perfect moment, as this substitution was made just before a Raven King (Alpine, Utah) double to right center field. This double brought in Ohio’s first run of the day.

A wild play advanced King to third base. Chelsea Hortman (Cincinnati, Ohio) struck out but was able to advance to first on a passed ball. King, on a designed hit-and-run, was on her way to third base when the catcher attempted to catch her. The close play resulted in Ohio having runners on first and third. Erin Lashley (Pickerington, Ohio) took advantage of this, singling up the middle to bring King home. A few plays later, Alexis Joseph (Alvin, Texas) hit a shot which forced the shortstop into an error, resulting in the Bobcats’ third run of the inning.

Kent State (27-27, 11-10 MAC) was able to pull within just one run in the top of the sixth inning when Jessica Blanton hit her sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. McClary was able to close things out from this point, retiring the next four batters in order.
