BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (33-21, 14-9) wrapped up the regular season by completing the series sweep of Bowling Green (18-36, 6-17) by downing the Falcons, 9-3, on Saturday afternoon (May 7). The Bobcats’ 33 wins this season are now the second-most victories in a single season.
Just as they did in the first game of the series, the Bobcats didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard. In the top of the first inning, Jamie Wren (Whittier, Calif.) reached on a walk and advanced to second on a base hit to leftfield by Danielle Stiene (Loveland, Ohio). Then with one out, Morgan Geno (Chillicothe, Ohio) smashed a rocket to straightaway center for her third homerun of the season, giving Ohio the early 3-0 lead.
Ohio extended its lead in the top of the third inning when Stiene recorded her second hit of the game, a double to right center. Geno then walked to put runners on first and second. Stiene then scored when Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) reached on an error by the Falcon second baseman. The Bobcats then loaded the bases on a single by Mikayla Cooper (Delaware, Ohio). Then with one out, Geno scored when Deanna Cole (Akron, Ohio) reached on an infield single over the pitcher’s head. The Bobcats added on another run when Hutchinson scored on a sacrifice fly to leftfield by Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.), putting Ohio up 6-0.
Bowling Green got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when with two outs, the Falcons had back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second. Then Marisa Shook recorded a single, scoring Haley Schrock. Chelsea Raker then scored on the single due to a Bobcat error, cutting the Ohio lead to 6-2 after three innings.
Ohio got a run back in the top of the fourth inning when Wren roped a double to the right center wall. Then Stiene registered her third hit of the game, a single, scoring Wren and giving Ohio a 7-2 lead.
The Bobcats added on in the top of the sixth inning when Sloan Walker led the inning off with an infield single. She then advanced to second when Stiene walked. The Bobcats loaded the bases when Geno reached on a fielder’s choice and Walker slid under the tag of the third baseman. Then with no outs, Hutchinson took the first pitch of her at bat and roped it to right center, scoring Walker and Stiene and giving Ohio the 9-2 lead.
The Falcons got a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when leadoff batter, Shook hit a homerun to centerfield. The next batter then reached base on an infield single and then the next BGSU batter walked to out runners on first and second. Geno then entered the game with no outs and two runners on and would work her way out of the jam and keeping Ohio’s 9-3 lead intact.
Stiene got the start, pitching five innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and striking out one. Geno entered the game in the sixth inning, pitching two innings and allowing no runs on no hits and retiring all six batters that she faced.
At the plate, the Bobcats registered 12 hits, led by Stiene who was 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Hutchinson was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored and Claytor went 2-for-4. Geno had one hit, a home run, and three RBI and two runs scored. Wren, Walker, Cooper and Cole all added hits for Ohio.
