MIDLAND, Mich. - The eighth-seeded Ohio softball team gave top-seeded Western Michigan all it could handle but dropped a 1-0 decision in eight innings to the Broncos in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Bobcat starter Michelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) matched Western Michigan starter Krysten Shumaker, who earned first-team All-MAC honors, pitch-for-pitch through the first seven innings. Sauter held the Broncos scoreless on four hits through regulation.
Shannon Weidner (Pickerington, Ohio) walked to lead off the top of the eighth. Emily Futscher (Cincinnati, Ohio) sacrificed pinch-runner Danielle Kelley (Franklin, Tenn.) over to second but the Bobcats were unable to drive her in.
In the bottom half of the eighth, the Broncos put runners on first and second with nobody out. Sauter struck out the next batter but Kristin Strange, who set a conference record for doubles in a season, doubled to left-center to plate the winning run.
Sauter threw her 14th complete game of the season in the loss, going all eight innings and allowing only the one run on seven hits. She struck out five while walking two. Sauter falls to 12-17 on the year.
The Bobcats will move on to play Central Michigan in the consolation bracket. The first pitch is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. The action can be followed live on Gametracker.
