Bobcats Split Doubleheader with Colonels
In its first home action of the 2012 season, Ohio Softball split a doubleheader with visiting Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon. The Bobcats earned a 4-1 victory in the first game before falling by a final score of 9-0 in the second.
The Bobcats will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak, their longest such skid of the 2013 season. Ohio dropped a 12-3 contest against Bradley to close its participation at the 2013 University of Washington Husky Classic before falling 7-4 and 6-3 in a Friday home doubleheader against Dayton. Ohio's games against the Flyers, which were moved to Athens due to a venue change, were the first home night games in recorded program history.
Fans will be able to follow Tuesday's games live, as Eastern Kentucky will be providing a live stat broadcast of each contest. To access this, please click the appropriately labeled link at the top of the page.
Heading into Tuesday's games, senior Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.) has a chance to make history once again for the Green and White. The catcher already set a new Ohio program standard by hitting her 28th career home run at Seattle on March 7, and now she has a chance to become Ohio's all-time RBI leader in the near future. Currently sitting at 110 career RBI following the series against Dayton, Gellerman would tie the program standard of 114 (set by Margo Ruther from 1993-96) with four more RBI and could become the new program leader with five more.
Eastern Kentucky enters Tuesday's doubleheader the owner of a 14-9 record which includes a 3-0 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Colonels have not yet played at home in 2013, and Tuesday's series will serve as their home opener. Eastern Kentucky is currently on a four-game winning streak, recently winning the back half of a doubleheader at Middle Tennessee and beating Belmont in three straight contests.
EKU has shown balance both offensively and defensively so far in 2013. The Colonels boast five hitters with batting averages of .300 or higher, with Melissa Costa leading the way at .375. Eastern Kentucky's pitching staff has been strong this season, posting a combined earned-run average of 2.36 while striking out 158 hitters and walking just 49. Leanna Pittsenbarger is the team's most effective pitcher, going 9-5 in 19 appearances with a 1.90 ERA.
Following the doubleheader series at EKU, the Bobcats will be in action at home against Canisius. The Bobcats and Golden Griffins will begin doubleheader play at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.
