ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University Softball Team (13-10) gets back in action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Canisius in a doubleheader. The Bobcats and Golden Griffins will first take to the field at 1 p.m.
Saturday's doubleheader will mark just the second all-time meeting between the Bobcats and Golden Griffins. Ohio defeated Canisius by a final score of 6-0 during the 2011 season.
Saturday's doubleheader will serve as Ohio's first "Bark in the Park" day of the 2013 season. Fans are welcomed to bring their dogs along with them to catch all of the action at the Ohio Softball Field.
The Bobcats are coming off a Tuesday doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky which saw them fall twice, 10-3 and 7-0. Ohio ran into a very strong pitching staff, hitting .136 over the course of the two games. EKU's Leanna Pittsenbarger had an especially solid performance against the Bobcats in the second game of the day, limiting the Green and White to just one hit in seven innings of work.
Senior slugger Caitlin Colvin (Bonney Lake, Wash.) added to her team-leading home run total on Tuesday evening. Colvin hit her 11th home run of the season in the first game, a figure which ranks third in Ohio's single-season record book.
Canisius enters the weekend the owner of an 11-6 record. The Golden Griffins most recently went 3-2 last week at the George Mason Cherry Blossom Classic in Fairfax, Va. To this point in the season, Canisius has posted the most wins in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and is the only MAAC team with a winning recorded headed into the weekend.
The Golden Griffins are hitting .308 as a team and have driven in 91 runs compared to just 57 by their opponents. Three Canisius student-athletes have recorded at least 11 RBI this season, with Robin Kennery and Tori Nappo leading the way with 15 apiece. Canisius boasts a solid pitching staff, with two Golden Griffins owning winning records inside the circle and posting sub-3.00 ERAs. Ohio will likely match up against Jen Sonsaul (7-3, 2.33 ERA) and Amanda Baun (3-2, 2.57 ERA) on Saturday.
