ATHENS, Ohio - Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.) has been named a Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Thursday. The academic honor is the second one Gellerman has earned this season, and including her three MAC East Player of the Week awards, marks the fifth time she has been honored by the league office.
Gellerman had a tremendous week for Ohio Softball, hitting .500 and slugging at a rate of 1.429 in four Mid-American Conference games at Toledo and Bowling Green. The senior recorded at least one hit in every game and even had two multi-hit games, one each coming against Toledo and Bowling Green. Four of Gellerman's seven hits were home runs, as she also registered two multi-HR games. The native of San Diego, Calif., did not strike out once in her 15 plate appearances of the weekend and was smart on the base paths as well, scoring six of Ohio's 16 runs.
In two of Ohio's four games during the week, Gellerman slugged at an outrageous clip of 2.000 or higher. Her best game of the weekend was the first game at Toledo, during which she went 3-4 (2 HR), scored twice, drove in two runs, and slugged at a rate of 2.250.
With her four home runs on the weekend, Gellerman broke her prior record of 13 home runs in a single season and now has 17 in 2013 following a three home run outing against Ohio State on Tuesday. This is the highest single-season total in program history. She also set the new program standard in career RBI, surpassing the prior program mark of 114 during Ohio's second game at Toledo.
Ohio will next be in action on Friday, April 12 against Miami. The Bobcats and RedHawks will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
