ATHENS, Ohio – Fresh off of a doubleheader sweep over visiting Wright State, the Ohio University softball team (21-22, 4-8 Mid-American Conference) gets back in action on Saturday afternoon at MAC-East rival Akron. The Bobcats and Zips will begin a two-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. before wrapping things up with the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Bobcats will be seeking their first wins in MAC play since a 5-1 victory at Bowling Green on April 6. Since that game, Ohio has lost league matchups with Bowling Green, Miami, and Ball State. Ohio currently sits tied for fifth place in the MAC East with Akron and is one of three teams in a three-way tie for seventh place in the overall league standings.

In their last game action, the Bobcats pounded Wright State in a doubleheader at the Ohio Softball Field on Thursday afternoon, winning by final scores of 5-1 and 13-1 (five innings). Ohio hit .391 at the plate throughout the course of the two games and six Bobcats recorded at least two hits.

Scouting the Zips
Akron enters this weekend with an 18-20 overall mark which includes a 4-8 record in league play. The Zips have emerged victorious in two of their last three contests, winning at Niagara on April 16 and splitting a weekend series with Miami on April 13 and 14.
Akron hits .251 as a team but has upped its average in league play to .274. The Zips boast three hitters at or above the .300 mark in MAC games, with Shawna Hochstetler (6 RBI, .512 slug.) and Jessica Schneider (10 RBI, .417 slug.) proving to be the most dangerous offensive players in Akron’s 12 MAC contests. Inside the pitching circle, Ohio is most likely to see Erin Seiler (12-13, 2.57 ERA) and Alissa Birkhimer (5-4, 3.03 ERA).

According to available records, Saturday and Sunday’s games will mark the 82nd and 83rd all-time meetings between Ohio Akron. The Zips hold a dominating 58-23 advantage in the series which has its roots in the 1981 season. Since head coach Jodi Hermanek has been in charge of the Bobcats, Ohio has won five of the nine meetings between the two teams. The Bobcats have won four of the last five games against Akron, a mark which includes a doubleheader split in Athens last season.
