Softball to Wrap Up Road Schedule This Weekend

ATHENS, Ohio - After playing its first 26 games of the season away from home, the Ohio softball team will wrap up a 36-game road schedule this weekend against conference rivals Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. The Bobcats will kick off the weekend with a doubleheader against the Huskies on Friday and conclude with singles games against the Broncos on Saturday and Sunday. Ohio didn't play a home game until March 30 in a conference opening doubleheader against Ball State. The Bobcats played in five different tournaments during the non-conference schedule, playing 18 teams on neutral sites. Three of the tournaments were in North Carolina with the remaining two being in South Carolina and California. Ohio's original home opener was suppose to be on March 7 against Dayton, but was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. The make-up doubleheader will be on May 7 at the Ohio Softball Field. A LOOK AT THE `CATS On offense, Debbie Szalejko (Beavercreek, Ohio) has a team-best .390 batting average. Szalejko leads the team with 136 at bats and 53 hits. She has a seven-game hitting streak intact and totals five doubles and a team-best four triples. Kelly Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) bats .366 on the season and leads the team with 30 RBI. She also totals 48 hits, 18 runs and a team-high eight doubles. Shalene Petrich (Chehalis, Wash.) bats .325 and leads the team with 22 runs scored and 22 stolen bases. Candace Saucedo (Ontario, Calif.), Michelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) and Natalie Armstrong (Murrysville, Pa.) round out Ohio's pitching circle. The trio combines for 242.5 innings of work and 172 strikeouts. Saucedo (4-4) has a 2.24 ERA, Sauter (13-9) has a 2.47 ERA and Armstrong (3-7) has a 4.17 ERA. |
