AKRON, Ohio-The Ohio softball team fell 2-0 in the opener of its three-game series versus Akron at Buchtel Field on Saturday. Game two between the Bobcats and the Zips was postponed after five innings due to inclement weather in the area.
“We had good pitching, we just needed to hit the ball,” head coach Roanna Brazier said.
After both sides managed only one hit apiece in the first three innings, Akron (22-23, 6-12) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Kerry Omerza doubled to left center and scored two batters later on a Bobcat error.
Ohio (18-25, 11-7) looked to tie the game in the sixth, as freshman Kelly Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) singled to left field and advanced to third with one out on a sacrifice bunt by senior Kiersten Scrima (Olympia, Wash.) and a bunt single by Sarah Melvin. The Bobcats were unable to find the equalizer though, as junior Jennifer Tisevich (Canton) popped out to the shortshop and sophomore Robin Miller (Chagrin Falls) struck out looking after senior Erin Chapman (Beavercreek) walked to load the bases.
The Zips added an insurance run in the sixth when Omerza homered off of Bobcat starter Kerri Harley (Hickory Hills, Ill.) to start the inning. That would be all Akron starter Tina McCauley needed, as she retired Ohio in order in the seventh for the complete game shutout.
Harley got the start and went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk. Freshman Natalie Armstrong (Murrysville, Pa.) pitched the final inning, retiring all three batters she faced.
Game two of the doubleheader was tied at 2-2 after five innings of play when the game was postponed due to torrential downpours. The game will resume at noon tomorrow, with the series finale to be played following the conclusion of game two.
