ATHENS, Ohio – Many things can happen over the course of seven years. For the Ohio University softball team (26-27), missing the Mid-American Conference Tournament is not one of them. The Bobcats prepare to make their seventh straight MAC Tournament appearance on Wednesday afternoon, opening play in the 2013 tournament as the No. 6 seed against No. 7 seed Bowling Green.

First pitch between the Bobcats and Falcons is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Akron, Ohio. All games at the tournament will be played at Firestone Stadium. The MAC will be streaming each and every tournament game LIVE on MAC-Sports.com. Fans can access the Tournament Central page at the top of this release. Gametracker will be provided for every Ohio game on OhioBobcats.com.

Ohio enters the tournament following its best offensive season in program history. The Bobcats hit a program and MAC record 77 home runs, 24 of which have come off the bat of Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.). Gellerman currently ranks second in the country in home runs, trailing Megan Baltzell of Longwood by just two round-trippers. The senior slugger also ranks fourth in the country with a slugging percentage of 0.963.

MAC Tournament History
Wednesday will mark the first game of Ohio’s 14th appearance in the MAC Tournament in program history. The Bobcats made their first appearance in 1982 and are currently making their seventh straight appearance this season. Ohio has a 16-24 record in 40 games played at the tournament in program history. The Bobcats are currently riding a four-game losing streak in tournament action.

Ohio was a MAC champion in 1995, earning the program’s lone NCAA Tournament appearance, but the Bobcats have never won the MAC Tournament in its current format. Ohio placed second at the tournament at the end of the 2011 season.

What Happens Next?
The MAC Tournament is played in the double-elimination format, meaning that a team must lose twice to be eliminated from competition. If Ohio defeats Bowling Green on Wednesday afternoon, the Bobcats will play No. 3 seed Central Michigan Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. Should Ohio lose to the Falcons on Wednesday afternoon, the Bobcats would then play the loser of Northern Illinois and Miami/Toledo on Thursday morning at 11 a.m.

The First Opponent
Ohio and Bowling Green have met seven times in MAC Tournament history, first competing against one another in the postseason in 1986. The Bobcats hold a 4-3 advantage over the Falcons in postseason play. BGSU enters the tournament with a 26-22 mark which included a 9-13 record in MAC play. The Falcons ended the season on a three-game losing streak, dropping the second half of a doubleheader at Western Michigan before being swept on the road at Northern Illinois.

Bowling Green ended the MAC schedule with the best team ERA in the conference, as Falcon pitchers combined for an impressive 1.83. Bowling Green also ranked No. 4 in opposing batting average, allowing other teams’ hitters a success rate of .248. Ohio and Bowling Green split this season’s series in Bowling Green, as Ohio won the first game (5-1) and lost the second (3-2).
