AKRON, Ohio - All season long, talk surrounding the Ohio University softball team (27-28) has been around its offense, as the team has hit a program and league record 78 home runs. On Thursday, it became about the program's defense when Alyssa Wolfe's game-winning acrobatic outfield catch was featured on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays.
Wolfe's play was ranked as the No. 2 play of the day on Thursday, May 9, 2013. You can watch it in its entirety below:
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and the winning run in the batters' box, Wolfe made her game-ending catch. Jenna Modic of rival Miami hit a deep shot to left center, one which seemed certain to be a game-winning home run for the RedHawks. Wolfe (Junction City, Ohio) sprinted after it and made the catch to end the game, catapulting over the wall in the process.
"This is probably the biggest play (of my softball career)," said Alyssa Wolfe. "It saved the game, which I didn't realize at the time. It was pretty big to have the chance to do that for my team: it's what we play for."
"I wasn't at all (thinking about being so close to the wall)," Wolfe added. "It wasn't until after the fact that I realized exactly what had happened and how big the play was."
"This is an exciting honor to be able to have some national recognition," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "It was an awesome play that came at a clutch moment to win us a game and keep us in the championship tournament. Alyssa is a talented athlete, this was a talented athletic play, and we're just really thankful that we're getting this chance to have this exposure for Ohio Softball."
Ohio will next be in action on Friday, May 10 at 1:30 p.m. The Bobcats will play Kent State at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
