ATHENS, Ohio - The awards keep accumulating for Lauren Gellerman of the Ohio Softball Team. Shortly after being named First Team All Mid-American Conference, the junior catcher was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Mideast Region Second Team on Thursday afternoon.
Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.) is one of just 25 players to be honored in the Mideast region. Twelve student-athletes were named to the First Team while Gellerman and 12 others received Second Team honors. Lauren is one of only three softball players from the Mid-American Conference to earn the honor, as she is joined on the Mideast Region teams by Alissa Birkhimer (1B - Akron) and Jessica Simpson (P - Miami).
A .340 hitter who slugged at an impressive clip of .660, Gellerman had an incredible 2012 season for the Bobcats. The junior collected 52 hits in 153 at-bats, 10 of which were doubles. Her 45 RBI ranked No. 1 on the team this season and she tied for the team lead in home runs with 13. Gellerman's 13 home runs co-set a new program record--with teammate Raven King--and in the process shattered the prior record of eight.
Lauren was an asset for the Bobcats on the defensive front as well, registering 255 putouts and 33 assists on 296 opportunities to accumulate a fielding percentage of 97.3.
Gellerman was twice named a MAC East Player of the Week during the season and was also recognized for her strong academic performance, being named a Scholar Athlete of the Week on May 9.
