ATHENS, Ohio - In addition to having a record-setting campaign on the softball diamond, the Ohio University softball team set a new program standard in the classroom in 2012-13, earning four spots on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Five Bobcats also earned Honorable Mention status on Friday morning when the team was announced by the league office, bringing the program's total to nine academic honors for the year.
Caitlin Colvin (Bonney Lake, Wash.), Lauren Gellerman (San Diego, Calif.), Chelsea Hortman (Cincinnati, Ohio), and Alyssa Wolfe (Junction City, Ohio) were named to the Academic All-MAC Team Friday while teammates Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, Md.), Raven King (Alpine, Utah), Erin Lashley (Pickerington, Ohio), Dakota Pyles (Galloway, Ohio), and Tessa Bailey (Acworth, Ga.) received Honorable Mention status.
Ohio's four Academic All-MAC Team selections and five Honorable Mentions both ranked second in the league this season. The total of nine academic honors ranked second as well among the 12 softball programs in the MAC, finishing only behind Kent State's 10.
Earning four spots on the Academic All-MAC Team is a program record for Ohio, breaking the mark of three set in 2011. Earning nine total academic recognitions ties a program standard set last season when Ohio's Jillian Van Wagnen earned a spot on the team while eight of her teammates were recognized as Honorable Mentions.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
