ATHENS, Ohio - Eighteen home games, 56 total contests and four non-conference tournaments highlight the 2013 Ohio Softball schedule, the entirety of which was released on Tuesday. The Bobcats will open the season on Feb. 8 in Greenville, N.C. and play their first home series on March 23.
Trips to Las Vegas, Seattle and an early April home doubleheader against the Ohio State Buckeyes will provide excellent experience for the Bobcats before they head into Mid-American Conference play on March 29.
Ohio will open the 2013 season at the East Carolina University Pirate Classic on Friday, Feb. 8. At this tournament in Greenville, N.C., the Bobcats will match up against Towson, Cleveland State, Rider and host East Carolina.
The very next weekend will be the first of Ohio's two cross-country trips. The Bobcats will head out to Las Vegas, Nev., on Feb. 15 for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. Ohio will face off against traditional NCAA powers Oregon (No. 6 to end 2012 season) and UCLA (No. 16). In addition to these two games, the Bobcats will also take on Idaho State University, host UNLV and the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
Ohio will conclude its non-conference tournament play at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Frost Classic (Feb. 22-24) and the University of Washington Huskie Classic (March 7-9). In Tennessee, Ohio will compete against North Carolina Central, Niagara, Lipscomb, Boston College and Tennessee Tech. While in Seattle at the beginning of March, Ohio will take on Seattle University, Yale, Washington (No. 18) and Bradley.
The Bobcats will conclude the road portion of their non-conference schedule with doubleheaders at Dayton (March 13) and Eastern Kentucky (March 19). Ohio had success against these teams in 2011, beating Dayton twice by a combined score of 25-15 and splitting a doubleheader with Eastern Kentucky.
Ohio opens its home schedule on March 23, hosting Canisus in a four-game series stretched over Saturday and Sunday. Each day of games is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Ohio Softball Field.
The Bobcats begin Mid-American Conference play in a curious fashion, playing their first eight league games away from Athens. Ohio opens the MAC schedule at Kent State on March 29 and then travels to Buffalo (March 30-31), Toledo (April 5) and Bowling Green (April 6-7). Breaking up this conference road swing is a home doubleheader against Wright State on April 2.
Ohio begins its longest homestand of the season on April 9 when it hosts regional competitor Ohio State in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. The Bobcats will then play six more games through the first half of April, hosting Miami (April 12), Ball State (April 13-14) and Marshall (April 17).
The Bobcats' final conference road trips are journeys to Akron, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois in late April. Ohio will then end the regular season by hosting Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan at the beginning of May.
The 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament will take place in Akron from May 8-11.
