2014 Ohio University Softball Schedule
ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University softball program announced its 56-game 2014 schedule on Thursday.
"It's going to be a challenging schedule," said sixth-year head coach Jodi Hermanek. "It puts us on the road for a lot of weekends in a row and will really test us and our conditioning. We go to some big places, but it's a schedule that I think this team is ready to take on and compete against. We play a lot of teams from all over the nation and from so many different conferences, which is exciting."
The slate features 13 games against nine 2013 NCAA Tournament participants, including Georgia, Louisville, Mississippi State, South Carolina, South Alabama, Louisiana-Lafayette, Marshall, Northwestern State and Central Michigan.
"We're excited to face teams of this caliber," said Hermanek. "All of the games that we're going to be playing in this year will challenge us to put our best foot forward. We're going to have to be ready to play and ready to face a challenge."
The Bobcats will open the regular season in Columbia, S.C., at the Carolina Class Feb. 7-9. Ohio's 14-game home slate gets underway on March 12 with a doubleheader against Wright State at the Ohio Softball Field. The 22-game Mid-American Conference slate begins with a doubleheader at Eastern Michigan on March 28. The regular season concludes on May 4 with the Bobcats hosting Northern Illinois on Senior Day.
The season-opening Carolina Classic features contests against Presbyterian, UNC Greensboro, host South Carolina and Iowa.
The second weekend (Feb. 14-16) of the season will take place in Athens, Ga., with matchups with South Alabama, host Georgia, Mercer and Furman.
A visit to Chattanooga, Tenn., and an appearance in the Frost Classic is on tap for the third weekend (Feb. 21-23). Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech, Middle Tennessee State, Butler and Northwestern State will be the opposition for the `Cats.
Ohio heads farther south for the fourth weekend (Feb. 28-March 2) of the season to take part in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Softball Classic, with South Alabama, Chattanooga, Texas State, Louisiana-Lafayette and host Mississippi State on the docket.
Ohio's final regular season tournament will be held March 7-9 as Louisville hosts the Red and Black Classic. The Bobcats will square off with Ohio State, Illinois State, Massachusetts and battle Louisville twice.
Non-conference road midweek games include Tennessee State (March 4), Lipscomb (doubleheader; March 5), Dayton (doubleheader; March 20), Ohio State (doubleheader; April 9) and Marshall (doubleheader; April 23).
The MAC schedule features home matchups against Kent State (doubleheader; April 4), Buffalo (April 5-6), Toledo (doubleheader; April 11), Bowling Green (April 12-3), Western Michigan (doubleheader; May 2) and Northern Illinois (May 3-4). Ohio's MAC road schedule features Eastern Michigan (doubleheader; March 28), Central Michigan (March 29-30), Miami (doubleheader; April 18), Ball State (April 19-20) and Akron (April 26-27).
"There are a number of teams in our conference that are the same type of caliber as some of these teams that we're going to be facing in our non-conference schedule," said Hermanek. "Our non-conference schedule really sets us up for playing some really high-level games and competition, and that's what we're going to see from our conference. There's a lot of parity in the MAC. I feel like with the top six teams, it's anybody's ballgame, any day. It's just about who plays the most sound softball and executes the best."
The 2014 MAC Tournament will be held May 7-10 in Akron, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
