Ryan Walthall enters his second season as the assistant coach for the Ohio University volleyball team. In that role, Walthall serves as the team's defensive coordinator while providing scouting analysis on Ohio opponents throughout the season.

In his first season with the Bobcats, Walthall led a stellar defense that ranked first in the conference in opponent hitting percentage, first in blocks per set (2.75) and fifth in digs (16.24/set).

Walthall worked closely with First Team All-MAC and All-MAC Freshman Team selection Meredith Ashy, whose 540 digs and 4.75 digs per set in 2012 ranked second-best all-time in the Ohio rally scoring era.

Walthall arrived in Athens after spending three seasons as an assistant at the University of North Florida.

Serving as the top assistant for the Ospreys, Walthall helped UNF to Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championships in two-straight seasons. In 2011, he directed a defense that ranked among the league leaders in blocking, digs and opponent attack percentage.

Prior to UNF, Walthall spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with perennial power Nebraska. While a member of the Cornhuskers' staff, he assisted with video scouting, film breakdown and team training during practices while also helping with day-to-day administrative office duties.

Walthall was a four-year letter winner at Penn State under Coach Mark Pavlik. He played in 110 matches during his collegiate career and was a member of four national semifinal squads. In 2006 he helped the Nittany Lions to the National Championship match.

As a senior in 2007, he ranked 15th nationally and led Penn State with an average of 2.33 digs per set. During his junior season, Walthall moved to libero midway through the season, helping PSU to a 21-8 mark and a national runner-up finish. Walthall served as a defensive and serving specialist during his first two seasons at Penn State.

The Irvine, Calif. native attended Woodbridge High School, where he was a Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 selection and team MVP as a senior. That season he was also named the Co-MVP of the Southview League. In addition to his high school experience, he played club volleyball for the LBC, helping the team to the 2003 Junior Olympic National Championship.

Walthall earned his bachelor's degree in recreation, parks and tourism management at Penn State in May 2007.
