Volleyball Wins Home Opener

ATHENS, Ohio - The No. 21 Ohio volleyball team downed Kent State, 3-0, in a home opener on Thursday. "Kent State is a good team, they have a lot of talent and are well coached, said Head Coach Geoff Carlston. "I'm happy that we were able to control the match. We passed the ball really well and some of our players had good shot selections. They're learning new shots and that's important for us". Ellen Herman (Toledo, Ohio) registered a team-high 17 kills. Amanda Andersen (Lino Lakes, Minn.) chipped in 15 kills and Melissa Griffin (Whitehall, Mich.) had 11 kills. Savanah Parra (Temecula, Calif.) totaled 42 assists and Michaele Blackburn (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 17 digs. Parra and Molly Mangan (Claire, Ill.) each had nine digs. Kent State was led by Ashley Feutz with 12 kills. Katie Veatch posted 36 assists and Laura Jensen had 14 digs. The Bobcats opened the frame on an 8-2 run and maintained the lead throughout. The Golden Flashes were only able to pull within eight and the Bobcats won game one, 30-22. In game two, Ohio took a 7-5 lead before a 3-0 run, on three consecutive kills by Herman, put the Bobcats up 10-5. A 5-0 Ohio run put the Bobcats up 18-9. The Bobcats took their highest lead at 26-14 before closing game two with a 30-19 win. Ohio gained the lead early in game three pulling out 8-2. A 4-2 run put Kent State within four at 10-6 but Ohio pulled out to an eight point lead on several occasions and won game three, 30-25. |
