ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Volleyball won its fifth-straight match on Friday night, sweeping Buffalo 25-19, 25-22, 26-24. The Bobcats improved to 11-3 in the MAC and have now won 20 matches or more for the last 10 seasons.
Chelsea Bilger and Kelly Lamberti each finished with double-doubles as the freshmen combined for 26 kills and 23 digs. Bilger led Ohio with 14 and hit .303 while adding 11 digs. Lamberti had 12 kills and a match-best 12 digs for the Bobcats. Katie Post had five blocks to lead the Green & White and Mollie Geske was the third Bobcat with double-figure digs.
The first set was knotted 7-7 before Buffalo committed five consecutive errors to give Ohio an early advantage. An 8-1 Bobcat run was one that the Bulls could not overcome, and Ohio went on to win the set, 25-19. Bilger had six kills on 11 swings and no errors as the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Bobcats never led by more than four points in the second set but they kept Buffalo from ever taking the lead. Lamberti had five kills and three blocks, while Lexie Hartnett had two of her three kills and a trio of blocks in a 25-22 second-set win. Ohio finished with five team blocks in the set, their showing in the match.
Ohio trailed 12-4 in the third set before mounting a furious comeback. The Bobcats started by snagging five of the next six points to cut the lead in half at 13-9. Down 16-10, Ohio once again, scored five of six points to close within two at 17-15.
The Bobcats were still behind 20-16, before Bilger notched two kills on either side of a Buffalo error to get the home side within one. Another Bilger kill gave Ohio the lead at 22-21 and the teams traded points until the score read 24-24.
Lamberti and Faith Robins notched back-to-back kills to win the match in three sets for Ohio. Post and Lamberti had four kills apiece with the senior adding two aces. Ohio hit a match-best .371 in the final set.
The Bobcats host Akron tomorrow night in the regular-season finale for both teams. Ohio Volleyball will honor the contributions of its seniors after the match against the Zips. Play begins at 7 p.m.
