Jan. 19, 2012

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Ohio Volleyball had three student-athletes, Katie Post, Nicole Staverman and Lexie Hartnett, named to the 2011 Academic All-MAC team on Thursday. Leah Petrovich, Faith Robins, Kelly Colyar and Mollie Geske were named Academic Honorable Mention.

Post was named to the All-Academic Team for the second year in a row. She earned All-MAC First Team accolades for a second time after being named the MAC's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week this season. The senior led the league in blocking and ranked 11th nationally with 1.45 per set. Post also ranked third in the league in hitting percentage (.354) and eighth in total points. She was named to three all-tournament teams this season and set the Ohio career mark for block assists.

Staverman, a senior captain, was honored for the first time. She finished fourth on the team in digs and recorded 10 or more digs in seven contests for the Bobcats. The Louisville native has the highest GPA on the team with a 3.98 in retail merchandising & fashion product development.

Hartnett also received academic honors for the first time. The sophomore received All-MAC honors for a second time after helping Ohio rank 19th in the nation in blocks per set. Hartnett was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week on multiple occasions this year and was selected to the Comcast Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament Team. She ranked third in the MAC in blocks per set and placed second with 117.0 total blocks.

Ohio has had at least three players recognized on the MAC All-Academic Team for the past five seasons and had a record five named back in 2008.

The 2011 Volleyball Academic All-MAC team is voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 18 student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.

Haley Stein of Eastern Michigan, Kristin Hoffman and Allison McGlaughlin of Northern Illinois were named to the Academic All-MAC team for the third time in their careers. This is the most a student-athlete can be named to the team because freshmen do not qualify for this honor. Post, Rachel Iaquaniello of Eastern Michigan and Jessica Brown of Western Michigan were honored for a second time.

MAC Player of the Year Lauren Wicinksi of Northern Illinois claimed academic honors for the first time in her career along with Freshman of the Year Terin Norris of Western Michigan (Norris is a redshirt freshman).

Rounding out the team were Hartnett, Staverman, Jennifer Boyd of Ball State, Laura Avila and Kari Galen of Bowling Green, Lindsey Dulude of Central Michigan, Cassie Farrell, Jenn Caylor and Lisa Treadway of Miami and Ashley Turnage of Western Michigan.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
