ATHENS, Ohio -
Ohio University rising senior outside hitter Ellen Herman will travel to Colorado Springs this week for an open tryout that will serve as an audition for various USA Volleyball programs in 2009.
The tryout, which will tentatively feature 160 athletes, will be held by U.S. Women's National Team head coach Hugh McCutcheon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center from Feb. 20-22. In addition to trying out for the U.S. Women's National Team, the participants will also be considered for the U.S. Junior Women's National Team and the USA Women's Senior A2 Teams.
Named to the USA National A2 Team following a stellar performance at last year's USAVB open tryout, Herman burst onto the national scene after leading the team to its first USA Adult Open Championships title in four years. She totaled 11 kills in the gold-medal match to garner MVP honors at one of the largest national championships in any sport in the United States.
In 2008, the Toledo, Ohio, native became the first player in school history to earn All-America recognition before her senior season, collecting honorable mention acclaim from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). She led the Bobcats, and ranked ninth nationally, with an average of 4.57 kills per set en route to claiming AVCA All-Mideast Region, Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, first-team All-MAC and MAC Tournament MVP honors. Her 526 kills and average of 4.57 per set were both single-season Ohio rally-scoring records, while she also eclipsed the overall single-season program standard with 1,363 total attempts.
