ATHENS, Ohio – Sophomore setter Abby Gilleland, junior outside hitter Kelly Lamberti and sophomore libero Meredith Ashy will all look to earn spots on the U.S. Women’s National Team and/or the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program this weekend.
The auditions will take place Feb. 21-23 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Because all three players have remaining college eligibility, they will be evaluated for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team as well as the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program.
The Bobcat trio will take the court Friday from 6-7:50 p.m. as part of the White Group. Although groups can change on Saturday, Gilleland, Lamberti and Ashy are scheduled to be on the court at 11:50 a.m. -1:40 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tournament play begins on Sunday where players with similar skill level will play together in each session. The Sunday groups will not be known to the players until Saturday night.
Fans can access live streaming beginning Friday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. or can keep up with the tryouts via social media by searching the hashtag #USAVTryout, following them on Twitter and Instagram @USAVolleyball and @USAVball on Facebook.
There are 247 athletes from 107 colleges and universities participating in the event. Among the tryout participants are 63 liberos, 61 outside hitters, 60 middle blockers, 36 setters and 27 opposites.
The U.S. Collegiate National Teams program has two different options if selected. USA Volleyball will have one U.S. Collegiate National Team of 12 athletes and two coaches travel to China June 13-27, 2014. They will participate in a series of training sessions and matches in conjunction with a separate team representing the PAC-12 Conference.
The second option is training and participation at the 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) held in Minneapolis. It is estimated that 36 athletes will be invited to participate in the program with training beginning on June 22, 2014. The competition portion follows on June 26-30.
Selected athletes will be notified by early March. USA Volleyball will announce the selections by the end of March once all roster spots are accepted and confirmed.
