MAUMEE, Ohio - The Ohio University volleyball team kicked off its spring schedule with a third-place finish at a scrimmage tournament in Maumee, Ohio, on Saturday.
The Bobcats won six of seven sets on the day. Ohio earned 2-0 sweeps of Findlay (25-18, 25-23) and Tiffin (25-16, 25-13), before splitting with IPFW (28-26, 21-25). Ohio then advanced to the third-place match, where the Bobcats upended Cleveland State in one set, 28-26.
“The spring can be a bit of a roller coaster, so at this point we have a lot to work on,” head coach Ryan Theis said. “We are trying to combine some of the things we worked on this summer – which is a process. We look forward to improving throughout the spring.”
Freshman middle blocker Karin Bull (Bloomington, Minn.) led Ohio with 20 kills and hit at a .432 clip over the seven-set event.
“Karin had a great last match or two in Europe, so it was great to see her have continued success in Maumee,” Theis said.
The Bobcats also were bolstered by the strong passing game of the team’s back row. In addition, freshman setter Abby Gilleland (Bull Valley, Ill.) performed well over the course of the tournament.
“Abby did a nice job of competing and setting our hitters up with some good looks,” Theis said.
The Bobcats return to action April 6 at Ohio State. The match will be played at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
