COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio University volleyball team split four sets with intra-state rival Ohio State Saturday night at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

The Bobcats dropped the first set 25-22, bounced back to win the next two sets (25-22, 25-23), and fell in the shortened fourth set, 15-12.

The match was played at the end of the Ohio Valley Region National Bid Qualifier, so some of the area's top high school talent was on hand to take in the exhibition matchup between the Bobcats and Buckeyes.

“I thought this was a great exhibition in front of our region," head coach Ryan Theis said. "The Ohio volleyball community saw a high level match that went both ways. I thought after the first game, we settled in and played much more consistently.”

Coach Theis Match Analysis:

On battling through injuries:

“We adjusted well to Kelly Lamberti being out of the lineup with injury and other players stepped up and did well. We asked Abby Gilleland to be more offensive, and she had four kills in the first set. She did a nice job running our offense and scoring herself.”

“I thought Chelsea Bilger played really well in the roles we asked her to do, especially in the absence of Kelly.”

On the team’s defensive effort:

“We blocked at an elite level in the third set. We dug at an elite level in the fourth set, we just missed a couple of opportunities in transition offense. Our defensive specialists have continued to improve in the offseason and had a really good games three and four.

Overall analysis:

“It’s an exciting time to work and get better. I’m just happy with the improvements we are seeing with each position this spring. We’re already looking forward to the fall.”

The Bobcats return to exhibition action Saturday (April 13) with a match at Atlantic 10 foe Dayton.
