Cleveland, Ohio -
The Mid-American Conference 2007 Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll has been released by the league office and the Ohio volleyball team has been tabbed the preseason favorite to capture the conference regular season and tournament titles. Ohio received 11 votes for the regular season title and 10 votes to claim the MAC Tournament championship.
The Bobcats are looking to become the first team since Western Michigan (1983-87) to claim five straight MAC regular season and tournament titles. Ohio has won the previous four regular season and tournament crowns in impressive fashion. Since Head Coach Geoff Carlston's arrival in 2003 the Bobcats are a combined 75-1 against conference opponents. That record includes a 63-1 regular season mark and a perfect 12-0 record in the MAC Tournament. Ohio is currently on a 50-match conference winning streak, the fourth longest active winning streak in conference play in the nation. The Bobcats' last conference loss was at Akron on Nov. 8, 2003.
Ohio, who is ranked No. 25 in the 2007 CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll, returns 11 letterwinners and five starters from last year's 28-5 team. Last season the Bobcats fell to Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Bowling Green received one first place vote and was selected to finish second in the East Division, followed by Miami, Kent State, Buffalo and Akron. Bowling Green went 26-6 (13-3 MAC) and advanced all the way to the MAC Tournament final against Ohio last year.
In the West Division Western Michigan was tabbed the favorite, receiving nine first place votes. The Broncos return five letterwinners from last year's squad that went 21-15 (8-8 MAC). Northern Illinois was selected second in the West with two first place votes, followed by Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Ball State and Toledo.
