ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio University volleyball team was picked to finish second in the East Division in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll released Wednesday.
The Bobcats earned five of 12 first place votes and garnered four votes to win the MAC Tournament.
Bowling Green claimed the top spot (7 first place votes) in the MAC East and also received four votes to win the league tournament.
Western Michigan was picked to win the MAC West Division.
One of the premier programs in the Mid-American Conference, the Bobcats have claimed the MAC East crown in 11-straight seasons and have won the overall league title in seven of those campaigns. The Bobcats also have captured the MAC Tournament title on seven occasions over that span.
This season, the Bobcats return nine letter winners and five starters from a 2012 squad that finished 21-10 (14-2 MAC) and claimed the league’s regular season title.
The team is anchored by 2012 MAC Player of the Year Kelly Lamberti (Cary, Ill.) as well as All-MAC First Team selections Chelsea Bilger (Fishers, Ind.) and 2012 MAC Co-Freshman of the Year Meredith Ashy. Sophomore setter Abby Gilleland (Bull Valley, Ill.) garnered All-MAC Freshman Team honors in her inaugural season with the Bobcats. Six newcomers will suit up for Ohio in 2013, including graduate student transfer Alexis Pinson (Phoenix, Ariz.), who comes to Athens after a four-year stint at Arizona State.
The five Bobcat freshmen include outside hitter Katie Horton (Westland, Mich.), outside hitter/libero Mallory Salis (Oak Lawn, Ill.), middle blocker Ali Lake (Liberty Township, Ohio), defensive specialist Geneva Yee (Milwaukee, Wis.) and setter/libero Brooke Coleman (Plano, Texas).
The MAC will announce the 2013 Preseason All-MAC Teams on Thursday.
